VITAMIN-A Is: A Fat Soluble Supplement

*It can not be produced from within, or not in sufficient amounts.

*It must be found in food or supplements

*It can be lost from foods during preparation, cooking or storing.





TO RETAIN THE VITAMIN IN FOOD:

**Serve fresh fruits and vegetables

**Keep vegetables and fruits covered and refrigerated during storage.
**Steam Vegetables
**Braise, bake or broil meats instead of frying.

Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin.

It does not disolve in water

It can become toxic when taken in high levels.


TOXICITY SIGNS:

*Vomiting, jaundice and nausea

*Dizziness, headache, blurred vision

*Loss of muscular coordination

*Irritability and anorexia

*Drowsiness, and altered mentality


RDA:

4000 IU or 800 UG for females from 15 years old and up
5000 IU or 1000 UG for males from 15 years old and up
2500 IU or 500 UG for children 4 - 6 years old
3300 IU or 500 UG for children 7 - 10 years old
